I was approached in the latter part of 2011 by the Managing Director of Capital IT Resourcing to work on the logo development for this recently conceived company. They are UK based recruitment consultancy, with their primary focus being temporary and permanent roles within the commercial, banking & finance and public sectors. The logo uses colours which mimic the corporate market they operate within, whereas the semi slab typeface leans toward the serious end of the scale, but with less formality than a serif might.

Post logo development, I also produced a business card, printed upon 400gm matt board with a matt lamination to both sides. I’m a total sucker for business cards printed on a heavy board; anything under 400gsm just feels flimsy and too much like a throwaway product for my liking – there’s something infinitely more keepable about a sturdy, well finished business card.

Hopefully I’ll have the opportunity to get involved with some more of their design requirements throughout the coming year!

The intention of advertising is to be memorable, but is memorability relative to success? Not necessarily.

My ‘advert of the moment’ is the Velvet ‘Love Trees’ one; it’s memorable to the point that in the supermarket I skimmed past the Sainsburys own brand, past Andrex (although who doesn’t love cute puppies?!) and sought out the pack of velvet. I bought it. It might have been more expensive, or cheaper than my usual choice, but to be honest, I didn’t check. I like the fact they plant trees to replace the ones they use, and so for now, it is my toilet roll of choice.

Watch the advert below:

Another of my current favourites is Thomas Cook ‘Wonderful World’; It’s exciting, it’s fast paced and it uses such a well known song that it has you singing along without even thinking about it. I already know I want to get out there and see the world, and seeing such an array of wonderful places (I just wish I knew where all of them were!) in this advert really inspires me to make sure I do it – all I need now is a lottery win…!

Finally on my list is the advert for Dell XPS 13 ‘Ultrabook’. The advert is so slick that it really caught my attention. The product itself looks thinner than the MacBook Air (whether it is or not I’m unsure about without checking). However, the fact my husband bought me a brand spanking new laptop for my birthday less than a year ago coupled with the fact I’ve heard bad things about their customer service means giving this one a miss. Nice ad though guys.

Back to the initial question of ‘is memorability relative to success?’, some adverts which I simply cannot watch (but always remember) are the Churchill ones with that horrendous nodding dog with the voice of a park-flasher (what were they thinking?) and the Go Compare monstrosities (which there’s a lot of hate for on Twitter). I cannot abide them – to the point when I have to actually change channels, mute the television, or leave the lounge already. I know what those adverts are, I remmeber them, but to me, that doesn’t equal success. I won’t ever use either of those two services because of their advertising campaigns, and I’m pretty confident I’m not the only one of this opinion.

Any other fantastic ads out there that I’m missing out on? What’s your ad-of-the-moment?

I have finally, finally taken the plunge and signed up for a Pinterest account almost a year after my cousin first invited me! In only a few hours of use, the extent of my “pins” is an assortment of ampersands (somewhat predicatable) and a selection of pink hair (slightly less predictable).

The only thing I don’t currently “get”, is how Pinterest differs from the likes of We Heart It, since so far as I can tell, Pinterest is simply an image bookmarking website, and thus something already in existance (more than once) across the web. Of course, I’m happy to be corrected, so if there is more to Pinterest than this, feel free to speak up and let me know what I’m missing!

I’m still a LONG way from having a working site there (try 99% away), but this has gotta be better than the “COMING SOON” in Times New Roman that previously graced that page. Here’s a sneak peak – click to view.

I don’t buy into any of the sappy, money making side of things, but I don’t think it escaped anyone’s attention that today is not just any old Tuesday, it’s The Day of Love, and so what better day to share ‘Love Ampersand’ by Graham Smith? The ampersand is easily my favourite letterform, and here is yet another example of how wonderful it is (more here).

It did take a number of iterations to get the right feel, for me to be ‘OK’ with it. The challenge was to get that balance of ampersand and heart, not too much heart and not too much ampersand. That when you look at it you are not overwhelmed with one or the other. Is it a heart OR ampersand? The result you are looking for is when someone says, ‘it is both ampersand and heart’.

Everyone has their own individual approach and process they work through when embarking on something new; you can read the development stages Graham went through to end up here:

I’m taking part in Project 366 this year. In case you haven’t heard of this before, it’s a concept I first read about through a photography based blog, Photojojo, and is more commonly known as Project 365 when it’s not a leap year! Click here if you would like to read the thoughts behind it.

Project 365 is something I’ve taken part in previously; I’ve tried it on multiple occasions and only succeeded once, but the best thing about 2012 is that I have other friends taking part too, which I hope will help keep me on track through the whole year. The hardest part for me previously was getting through the drab winter months (and the year I succeeded was the one time I started mid-year), but this year has been okay so far, in fact, here is my favourite photo so far – and most liked on instagram! – click for full size.

I’m using Instagram on my iPhone (username @kapowwwww) which means I really have no excuses for failure this year, but if you don’t have that app, you can view my progress here.

Earlier this week, my lovely friend Daisy (who writes her own beauty blog – if that’s your thing, you should check it out) introduced me to the iHeart Breaking Hearts, and wow, I’m pretty glad she did! This is such a unique product, and with a super cute back story:

“I SEE HEARTS EVERYWHERE!” They were in the shadows, in a bag of chips, in the gum on the sidewalks. Abstract and surprising. So she started to document them, and every time I would see one, I would take a picture of it and send it to her and to someone IHEART. The moment I started sending hearts to people, I started receiving them tenfold. I would wake up to picture messages from friends of upside down bike seats and heart shaped puddles. It was beautifully cyclical and incredibly contagious. So contagious, I wanted to spread it. I thought about whether it was possible to spread the love, from the things we see, to things we think and say, and somehow inject it into the food we eat.

We all use cutlery. We have all had a moment in our lives when there’s been no cutlery available, whether you’ve gone for a picnic and forgotten the all important utensils, or you go to pick up a disposable fork from a supermarket and been greeted with only air. The iHeart is part fork, part knife and part scoop; it’s small enough to fit in your wallet, so you’ll never be without again. It’s colourful, reusable and best of all, it’s 100% biodegradable.

Happy eating, and enjoy the video:

*Not literally – nobody likes a heartbreaker.

It’s now been almost three weeks since the passing of Steve Jobs; a day when my Twitter timeline was full of the hashtag #RIPsteve and people across the globe all mourned the loss of one of the greatest (ONLY?) innovators of our time. Since this day, I’ve been shocked to the core at the vast minority of people saying “Who is Steve Jobs?” I mean, how can you not know?! Shocking!

Apple have their own Jobs tribute, and today I saw a link on Twitter to 50 Graphic tributes to Steve Jobs. It’s a post well worth a read; I don’t like everything on the list, but with a selection of 50, there is something for everyone.

Which are your favourites? These are mine:

This wouldn’t be the first time I’ve realised the void of my own personal design work on this blog, so I thought I would go through my portfolio and select some of my favourite projects so I can show off my more recent work! Today you get to see the logo I produced for MF Surveying, a project I embarked on during the early part of 2010, and which went on to include designs for a full corporate stationery set (business cards, compliments slips and letterheads).

MF Surveying is a Chartered Building Surveyor company based in Yorkshire (but covering the UK), targeting small business owners, residential clients and small and medium sized professional firms of solicitors, accountants and banks etc. The aim of the two partners was to bring a youthful edge to an otherwise dowdy industry.

What do you think of this logo? Do you like the MF ‘ligature’ I created, the colours and the font I’ve used?
